Sometimes you just can't get the story started.

It happens.

That's why writing prompts are so important. They help you start your story and give you a nudge towards a certain genre.

I don't always use a prompt, but they come in handy for writing exercises and freewriting.

Try this and let me know how it works:

I was running late for work when I saw the traffic light turn red. I slammed on my brakes and smacked the steering wheel in frustration with my hand. Should have left the house earlier! Then, a flash of movement caught my eye. I turned my head and saw...

*See if you can end your story with this sentence:

I never made it to work that day.
